Why do I need this medicine?
Aciclovir is used to treat viral infections such as cold sores and genital infections caused by herpes simplex virus.
How do I use this medicine?
Apply Aciclovir exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more often or over a larger area than instructed by your doctor.

This medicine is available as a cream or as an ointment.

If you are using the cream, follow these steps:
  1. Wash your hands.
  2. Clean and dry the affected area before application.
  3. Rub the cream gently on the affected area until it disappears. Do not cover, wrap or bandage the area unless instructed by the doctor.
  4. Wash your hands after using.
  5. Replace the cap of the tube.
If you are using the ointment, follow these steps:
  1. Wash your hands.
  2. Clean and dry the affected area before application.
  3. Use a rubber glove or finger cot when applying the ointment to avoid spreading the infection. Apply a sufficient amount of the ointment gently on the affected area to cover all lesions. Do not cover, wrap or bandage the area unless instructed by the doctor.
  4. Wash your hands after using.
  5. Replace the cap of the tube.
Avoid contact of this medicine with your eyes. Rinse immediately with water if it gets into your eyes. Alert your doctor if you start to have any problems with your eyes.

Your doctor will also discuss the use of Aciclovir as different brands and preparations of this medicine may only be used for a specific condition. It can either be used to treat cold sores or genital infections or for both conditions.

Do not use Aciclovir for any conditions other than what is prescribed by your doctor.

The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on the type and severity of your infection.

Apply Aciclovir at regular intervals. Do not skip any doses. You must complete the entire course of this medicine. If you don't, the infection will not be properly controlled.
What should I do if I have forgotten to use this medicine?
Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose to make up for a missed dose.

If you often forget to apply your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
When should I not use this medicine?
Do not use Aciclovir if you ever had an allergic reaction (e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to this medicine or similar medicines such as valaciclovir.
What should I take note of while using this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have a condition that makes your immune system weak (e.g. HIV or AIDS).

Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Aciclovir to a child. Children may be more sensitive to the side effects.

This medicine does not reduce your risk of passing herpes infections. Ensure that you use proper precautions to avoid spreading the infection to others.
What side effects could I experience?
Aciclovir may cause any of the following side effects: mild drying or flaking of the skin, skin itching or redness, and irritation, burning or stinging sensation at the application site.

If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, stop using this medicine and inform your doctor immediately. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.

Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Can I use this with other medicines?
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking or using any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
