Indications/Uses
Treatment & suppression of herpes simplex infection. Prophylaxis of herpes simplex infection in immunocompromised patients. Varicella & herpes zoster infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Herpes simplex infections 200 mg 5 times daily for 5-10 days. Suppression of herpes simplex infections 200 mg 2-5 times daily for up to 6-12 mth or 400 mg bd. Prophylaxis of herpes simplex infections in immune-compromised patient 200 mg qds, may be doubled in severely immune-compromised patient or patient w/ impaired gut absorption. Varicella & herpes zoster infections 800 mg 5 times daily for 7-10 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity.
Special Precautions
Pregnancy.
Adverse Reactions
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, headache, skin rash, dizziness, confusional states, hallucinations, somnolence.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid.
