Indications/Uses
HSV infections of skin & mucous membranes including initial & recurrent genital herpes. Herpes zoster infections. Suppression of recurrent herpes simplex infections in immune-competent patients. Prophylaxis of herpes simplex infections in immune-compromised patients.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Tab Adult Herpes simplex infections 200 mg 5 times daily at approx 4 hrly intervals for 5 days. Severely immune-compromised patient or w/ impaired gut absorption May double dose to 400 mg. Suppression of herpes simplex in immune-competent adult 200 mg qds at 6 hrly intervals or 400 mg bd at approx 12 hrly intervals. Prophylaxis of herpes simplex in immune-compromised adult 200 mg qds at approx 6 hrly intervals. Severely immune-compromised patient or w/ impaired gut absorption May double dose to 400 mg. Herpes zoster infections 800 mg 5 times daily at approx 4 hrly intervals for 7 days. Treatment & prophylaxis of herpes simplex in immune-compromised childn >2 yr Adult dose, <2 yr ½ adult dose. Renal impairment CrCl <10 mL/min Management of herpes simplex infections 200 mg bd at approx 12 hrly intervals. Herpes zoster infections CrCl 10-25 mL/min 800 mg tds at approx 6 hrly intervals, CrCl <10 mL/min 800 mg bd at approx 12 hrly intervals. Cream Adult, childn & geriatric Apply 5 times daily at 4 hrly intervals for 5 days, may be continued for up to 10 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Immunocompromized patients. Pregnancy & lactation. Tab: Elderly. Cream: Avoid application to mucous membranes. Avoid introduction into the eye.
Adverse Reactions
Tab: Skin rashes, GI effects including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea & abdominal pains. Cream: Pain including transient burring & stinging. Pruritus, rash & vulvitis.
Drug Interactions
Increased mean t½ & AUC by probenecid.
