Indications/Uses
HSV, varicella & herpes zoster infections. Suppression & prophylaxis of herpes simplex infections in immune-compromised patients.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Herpes simplex 200 mg 5 times daily for 5 days. Severely immunocompromised patient 400 mg 5 times daily for 5 days. Suppression of herpes simplex 200 mg qds or 400 mg bd, interrupted periodically at 6-12 mth intervals. Prophylaxis of herpes simplex 200 mg qds. Severely immunocompromised patient 400 mg qds. Herpes zoster & varicella 800 mg 5 times daily for 7 days. Treatment & prophylaxis of herpes simplex Childn ≥2 yr Adult dose, <2 yr ½ adult dose. Varicella infections Childn >6 yr 800 mg qds for 5 days, 2-6 yr 400 mg qds for 5 days, <2 yr 200 mg qds for 5 days. Severe renal impairment Herpes simplex 200 mg bd at approx 12 hrly interval. Herpes zoster & varicella 800 mg bd at approx 12 hrly interval. Moderate renal impairment Herpes zoster & varicella 800 mg tds at approx 8 hrly interval.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Ensure adequate hydration. Renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea; skin rashes.
Drug Interactions
Increased mean plasma t½ & AUC w/ probenecid.
