Prednisolone
Indications/Uses
Allergic disorders eg, bronchial asthma & allergic skin reactions; selected collagen & rheumatic disorders; connective tissue disorders; GI disorders eg, inflammatory bowel disease; disorders responsive to adrenocortical hormone therapy.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Initially 5-60 mL daily. Adult 6-50 mg daily in divided doses or as single dose on alternate days. Long-term therapy Not >7 mg daily. Short-term treatment in childn Not >2 wk.
Contraindications
Osteoporosis, active ulcer, psychoses or severe psychoneuroses, systematic fungal infections, acute infections unless effective, specific concurrent chemotherapy can be administered. Patients should not undergo immunisations. TB, except as adjunctive treatment w/ tuberculostatic drugs.
Special Precautions
Psychosis, acute glomerulonephritis, amebiasis, cerebral malaria, AIDS, TB, DM, glaucoma, osteoporosis, ulcerative colitis, CHF, myasthenia gravis, esophagitis, ocular herpes simplex, HTN. Delayed wound healing. May mask signs of infections. Concomitant use w/ live virus vaccines. Renal disease. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <2 yr. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
CHF, fluid & Na retention, hypokalemic alkalosis, K loss; HTN, thrombophlebitis, thromboembolism, tachycardia; exophthalmos, glaucoma, increased IOP, blurred vision, cataracts; GI, musculoskeletal & endocrine disorders; -ve nitrogen balance, growth suppression in childn, decreased glucose tolerance; increased sweating, poor wound healing, ecchymosis, bruising, petechiae, striae, thin fragile skin, suppression of skin test reactions.
Drug Interactions
Decreased effects w/ hepatic microsomal enzyme inducers eg, barbiturates, phenytoin, ephedrine, carbamazepine, rifampin. Increased risk of GI distress, bleeding & ulcers w/ aspirin, indomethacin, other NSAIDs. Antagonized effects of hypoglycemic agents, antihypertensives. Increased risk of digitalis toxicity w/ cardiac glycosides. Altered response to coumarin.
