Per mL Carbocisteine 20 mg, promethazine HCl 0.5 mg
Indications/Uses
Symptomatic treatment of troublesome, non-productive cough, particularly occurring at night.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 3-4 tbsp daily in divided doses. Childn 12-15 yr 2-3 tbsp daily in divided doses, 30 mth-12 yr 1½-2 tbsp daily in divided doses, 25-30 mth 1-1½ tbsp daily in divided doses.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to antihistamines. History of agranulocytosis. Risk of urine retention related to urethral or prostate disorders, angle-closure glaucoma. Combination w/ sultopride. Infants <2 yr.
Special Precautions
CV disorders, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Patients w/ peptic ulcer, epilepsy, diabetes. Rule out possible bronchial asthma or gastroesophageal reflux prior to therapy in childn. Avoid alcohol consumption & sun exposure during treatment. Fructose intolerance, glucose or galactose malabsorption syndrome or sucrase-isomaltase deficiency. Combination w/ expectorant or mucolytic. May affect ability to drive or operate machines. Severe renal &/or hepatic insufficiency. Not to be used during 1st trimester of pregnancy & lactation. Childn 2-6 yr. Not to be used in ped <2 yr. Not recommended in childn at risk of apnea <1 yr. Elderly patients w/ orthostatic hypotension, dizziness & sedation, chronic constipation, possible benign prostate hypertrophy.
Adverse Reactions
Severe bronchial congestion (infants); allergic skin reactions eg, pruritus, erythematous eruption, urticaria & angioedema; GI intolerance symptoms eg, gastric pain, nausea, diarrhea.
Drug Interactions
Enhanced sedative effect by alcohol. Increased risk of ventricular rhythm disorders w/ sultopride. Enhanced central depression w/ other CNS depressants eg, sedative, antidepressants, barbiturates, clonidine, hypnotics, morphine derivatives (analgesics & antitussives), methadone, neuroleptics, anxiolytics. Addition of adverse atropine effects w/ imipramine, antidepressants, anticholinergic, antiparkinsonians, atropine antispasmodics, disopyramide, phenothiazines, neuroleptics.
