Tablets containing Dexamethasone 0.5mg.
Dexamed has a glucocorticoid activity approximately 7 times higher than that of prednisolone.
Dexamed has little mineralo-corticoid activity and therefore has little influence on electrolyte metabolism.
Dexamed has potent antiallergic and antiinflammatory properties and it is indicated in a wide range of disorders amenable to corticosteroid therapy.
In acute and chronic conditions 4mg or more may be given initially, if necessary. Before terminating therapy, dose should be gradually reduced.
As maintenance dosage 0.5 - 1.5mg daily will be sufficient.
Cushing syndrome, gastro-intestinal ulcers, systemic fungal infections, herpes virus infections. Do not administer in pregnancy. Caution should be exercised in patients with tuberculosis, diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, mental changes, cardiomyopathy, hypertension, renal insufficiency.
Avoid vaccination with small-pox if on dexamethasone treatment. Prolonged administration of Dexamed may produce the usual corticosteroid adverse reactions (peptic ulcer, hypokalaemia, infections, CNS effects e.t.c.).
Visual disturbance: Visual disturbance may be reported with systemic and topical corticosteroid use. If a patient presents with symptoms such as blurred vision or other visual disturbances, the patient should be considered for referral to an ophthalmologist for evaluation of possible causes which may include cataract, glaucoma or rare diseases such as central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) which have been reported after use of systemic and topical corticosteroids.
As phenytoin, barbiturates, ephedrine and rifampicin may enhance the metabolic clearance of corticosteroids, resulting in decreased blood levels and reduced physiological activity, the dosage may have to be adjusted.
These interactions may interfere with dexamethasone suppression tests which should be interpreted with caution during administration of these drugs.
The prothrombin time should be checked frequently in patients who are receiving corticosteroids and coumarin anticoagulants at the same time.
When corticosteroids are administered concomitantly with potassium - depleting diuretics, patients should be observed closely for development of hypokalaemia.
Store in a cool and dry place protected from light.
