Indications/Uses
Potent anti-allergic & anti-inflammatory for wide range of disorders amenable to corticosteroid therapy.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Acute & chronic conditions Initially ≥4 mg. Maintenance: 0.5-1.5 mg daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Cushing syndrome, GI ulcers, systemic fungal & herpes virus infections. Patients w/ TB, DM, osteoporosis, mental changes, cardiomyopathy, HTN, renal insufficiency should exercise caution. Avoid vaccination w/ small-pox. Prolonged treatment may produce the usual corticosteroid AR (eg, peptic ulcer, hypokalaemia, infections, CNS effects). Do not administer in pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Consider referral to an ophthalmologist if patient presents w/ symptoms (eg, blurred vision or other visual disturbances) for evaluation of possible causes which may include cataract, glaucoma or rare diseases (eg, central serous chorioretinopathy).
Adverse Reactions
Drug Interactions
May enhance metabolic clearance by phenytoin, barbiturates, ephedrine & rifampicin. Frequently check prothrombin time when co-administered w/ coumarin anticoagulants. Concomitant use w/ K-depleting diuretics.
