Chloramphenicol Na succinate
Indications/Uses
Typhoid & paratyphoid fever, Shigella infections, bacteria meningitis, H. influenzae infections, pertusis, gm -ve bacterial infections, bacterial eye infections, cerebral abscesses; other infections caused by susceptible organisms.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 50 mg/kg/day in divided doses at 6 hrly intervals. Patients w/ infections due to moderately resistant organisms Up to 100 mg/kg/day.  Childn 50 mg/kg/day in 4 divided doses at 6 hrly intervals. Severe infections eg, bacteremia or meningitis Up to 100 mg/kg/day, reduced to 50 mg/kg/day.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Should never be given for minor infections or prophylaxis. Pregnancy & lactation. Gray syndrome in newborn.
Special Precautions
Hepatic & renal impairment (reduce dose). Avoid repeated courses & prolonged treatment. G6PD deficiency.
Adverse Reactions
Reversible depression of the marrow, aplastic anemia. Peripheral & optic neuritis (prolonged treatment). May cause Gray baby syndrome.
Drug Interactions
Enhanced effects of coumarins, some hypoglycemic agents & antiepileptics. May affect t½ of paracetamol, phenobarbitone, phenytoin or rifampicin. Disulfiram-like reactions w/ alcohol.
