Acetylcysteine is used together with other medicines to treat lung disorders associated with abnormal, thick, and viscous mucus secretions (phlegm).
This medicine reduces the thickness of the phlegm so it can be coughed up more easily.
Acetylcysteine may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.
Take Acetylcysteine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Take it together with food or immediately after a meal. Try to take it at the same time each day.
Acetylcysteine is available as an effervescent tablet and granules for oral solution.
If you are taking the effervescent tablet, dissolve it in a glass of water and drink it immediately. Do not swallow the tablet whole.
If you are taking the granules for oral solution, dissolve the content of the sachet into a glass of water, then stir with a spoon and drink immediately.
The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on the type and severity of your condition.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
If you often forget to take your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
Do not give Acetylcysteine to children below 2 years old unless instructed to do so by the doctor.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- asthma or history of bronchospasm (breathing distress caused by tightening and narrowing of the airways)
- at risk of bleeding in the stomach or bowel e.g. stomach ulcer, swollen veins of the oesophagus (food pipe)
- intolerance to food and drinks that contain large amounts of histamine e.g. wine, tomatoes, processed food
- reduced cough reflex
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Acetylcysteine to a child. Children may be more sensitive to the side effects.
If you are going to have certain laboratory tests (e.g. test for salicylates, test for ketones), inform your doctor that you are taking this medicine.
Acetylcysteine may cause any of the following side effects: nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, headache, ringing in the ears, and fast heartbeat.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience:
- rashes with peeling of the skin or blistering of the lips, mouth, or eyes accompanied by fever
- wheezing, chest tightness, difficulty breathing
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
- cough-relieving medicines
- glyceryl trinitrate (medicine for chest pain)
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
