Micronized progesterone
Indications/Uses
Progesterone-deficiency related disorders. Oral: Menstrual irregularity due to dysovulation. Vag: In vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles; alternative to oral route in case of adverse events.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Progesterone insufficiencies 200-300 mg daily in 1 or 2 divided doses. May increase dose to 600 mg daily in 3 divided doses, in case of aiding pregnancy. Vag Insert 1 cap deeply in the vag. Duration of treatment depends on indication & efficacy of treatment. Do not >200 mg/intake.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to progesterone & peanuts. Undiagnosed vag bleeding, mammary or genital tract carcinoma, thrombophlebitis, thromboembolic disorder, cerebral hemorrhage, porphyria. Severe hepatic dysfunction. Pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Not a treatment for premature labour. Not suitable for use as a contraceptive. Discontinue treatment if unexplained, sudden or gradual, partial or complete loss of vision, proptosis or diplopia, papilloedema, retinal vascular lesions or migraine occurs during therapy. Patients w/ conditions that might be aggravated by fluid retention (eg, HTN, cardiac disease, epilepsy, migraine, asthma); history of depression, diabetes, migraine or photosensitivity. Perform breast & pelvic exam as a routine procedure. Renal disease. Mild to moderate hepatic dysfunction. May cause drowsiness &/or dizziness in a minority of patients. Breastfeeding mothers.
Adverse Reactions
Acne, urticaria, rashes, fluid retention, wt changes, GI disturbances, changes in libido, breast discomfort, premenstrual symptoms, menstrual disturbances; chloasma, depression, pyrexia, insomnia, alopecia, hirsutism; VTE. Oral: Altered menstrual cycles, amenorrhea, intermenstrual bleeding, headaches. Vag: Local irritation.
Drug Interactions
May interfere w/ the effects of bromocriptine. May raise plasma conc of cyclosporine. May affect the results of lab tests of hepatic &/or endocrine functions. Accelerated metabolism by rifampicin. Ketoconazole may increase the bioavailability of progesterone.
