Omeprazole
Indications/Uses
Alternative to oral medication in duodenal & gastric ulcer, reflux oesophagitis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, aspiration prophylaxis, non-variceal upper GI bleeding.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IV Recommended dose: 40 mg once daily by slow inj over at least 5 min or as 10-30 min infusion or continuous infusion at 8 mg/hr. Zollinger-Ellison syndrome Initially 60 mg once daily. May require higher doses given as bid. Aspiration prophylaxis 40 mg 1 hr before operation. Suspected non-variceal bleeding 40 mg bid bolus or 80 mg stat followed by 8 mg/hr infusion for 72 hr.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Suspected gastric ulcer. May alleviate symptoms & delay diagnosis of malignancy. Not to be used in pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Asthenia, dizziness, headache; abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting; back pain, cough, rash, URTI.
Drug Interactions
Reduced dose of diazepam, warfarin & phenytoin. Decrease absorption of ketoconazole. Increased plasma conc w/ clarithromycin.
