Loratadine
Indications/Uses
Symptomatic relief associated w/ allergic rhinitis eg, sneezing, nasal discharge (rhinorrhea) & itching, as well as ocular itching & burning; chronic urticarial & other allergic dermatologic disorders.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn ≥12 yr 1 tab once daily. Severe hepatic impairment Adult & childn weighing >30 kg Initially 10 mg every other day, childn weighing ≤30 kg 5 mg every other day.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Discontinue treatment if arrhythmia occurs. May cause drowsiness. Avoid ethanol or composition w/ alcohol; QT prolonging medications eg, Ca channel blockers (eg, bepridil, verapamil), TCA, cisapride, quinidine. Concomitant use w/ macrolides (eg, erythromycin, clarithromycin); imidazole antifungals (eg, ketoconazole, itraconazole, fluconazole); HIV PIs; CYP450 inhibitors eg, cimetidine, metronidazole, zafirlukast, SSRIs. May be at risk of falling from the height in patient who drive or operate machines. Severe hepatic impairment. Pregnancy (1st trimester). Not recommended during lactation. Childn <2 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Drowsiness, fatigue, headache; skin rash; gastritis, nausea, dry mouth; hypersensitivity reaction.
Drug Interactions
Increased plasma conc w/ ketoconazole, erythromycin & cimetidine.
