Refined mucilloid of ispaghula seed (ispaghula husk)
Indications/Uses
Habitual constipation. Conditions in which easy defaecation w/ soft stools is desirable eg, in cases of painful defaecation after rectal or anal surgery, anal fissures & haemorrhoids. Patients to whom increased daily fiber intake may be advisable eg, as an adjuvant in constipation predominant irritable bowel syndrome, as an adjuvant to diet in hypercholesterolemia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Habitual constipation, painful defaecation after renal or anal surgery, anal fissures & haemorrhoids Elderly, adult & adolescent >12 yr 7-11 g in 1-3 doses daily. Childn 6-12 yr ½ to ⅔ of the adult dose (3-8 g) daily. Patient to whom increased daily fiber intake may be advisable Elderly, adult & adolescent >12 yr 7-20 g in 1-3 doses daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Best taken after meals. Stir the required amount into a glass of cold water (150 mL) & drink immediately. Do not take w/o water.
Contraindications
Patient w/ sudden change in bowel habit that persist for >2 wk, undiagnosed rectal bleeding & failure to defaecate following laxative use. Patients suffering from abnormal constrictions in the GIT w/ diseases of the oesophagus & cardia, potential or existing intestinal blockage (ileus), paralysis of the intestine or megacolon, DM which is difficult to regulate.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity. Not to be used in patients w/ faecal impaction & undiagnosed abdominal symptoms. Discontinue if constipation does not resolve within 3 days or if abdominal pain occurs or in case of any irregularity of faeces. Should be taken w/ sufficient fluid. Difficulty in swallowing or breathing or have any throat problems, chest pain & vomiting. Not recommended in childn <6 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Flatulence; abdominal distention, intestinal or oesophageal obstruction & faecal impaction.
Drug Interactions
Delayed enteral absorption w/ minerals (eg, lithium), vit B12, cardiac glycosides, coumarin derivatives & carbamazepine.
