Action
Medomycin (Doxycycline) displays activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative, organisms. While the spectrum of Medomycin is essentially that of the other tetracyclines, certain strains of S. aureus, have exhibited greater susceptibility in vitro to Medomycin, Clinical experience has shown that Medomycin (Doxycycline) differs from other tetracyclines by its remarkable absorption after oral administration and prolonged duration of antibacterial activity. Because of these, oral administration of only once-daily achieves therapeutic results highly comparable to those of other tetracyclines that require multiple daily doses. Bacteriological studies have shown that Medomycin (Doxycycline) disturbs the normal intestinal flora to a substantially lower degree than do standard doses of other tetracyclines. The absorption of Medomycin (Doxycycline) is not significantly influenced by the ingestion of food or milk, which impair the absorption of other tetracyclines. Thus Medomycin (Doxycycline) can be administered without regard to meals. Since the plasma half-life has been shown not to increase in patients with renal impairment. Medomycin (Doxycycline) is the tetracycline of choice in these patients.
