Constipation or for stool softeningAdult Initially 10-45 mL, maintenance dose: 10-25 mL. Childn 7-14 yr Initially 15 mL, maintenance dose: 10-15 mL, 1-6 yr Initial & maintenance dose: 5-10 mL. Infant <1 yr Initial & maintenance dose: Up to 5 mL. PSEAdult Initially 30-50 mL tds, may adjust to the maintenance dose to achieve 2-3 soft stools/day.
May be taken with or without food: For constipation & the production of soft stools: Preferably taken once at the same time each day. Oral solution may be taken diluted or undiluted. Do not hold the solution in the mouth for any length of time. Ensure adequate fluid intake daily.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Galactosaemia. GI obstruction, digestive perforation or risk of digestive perforation.
Consult a physician if the desired results are not observed after several days of treatment. Patients experiencing painful abdominal symptoms of unknown cause; serious side effects. Patients w/ hereditary problems of galactose or fructose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Diabetics (when using high doses for PSE). Long-term use of unadjusted doses/misuse can lead to diarrhoea & electrolyte balance disturbance. Discontinue treatment until symptoms have subsided in patients (taking high doses) experiencing diarrhoea &/or abdominal pain.
