Acetylcysteine
Indications/Uses
Secretolytic therapy in acute & chronic bronchopulmonary diseases accompanied by impaired formation & transport of mucus.
Dosage/Direction for Use
200 mg Adult & adolescent >14 yr 1 tab bid-tid. Childn & adolescent 6-14 yr 1 tab bid.  Childn 2-5 yr ½ tab bid-tid. 600 mg Adult & adolescent >14 yr ½ tab bid or 1 tab once daily. Duration of use: Not >4-5 days.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Dissolve tab in 1 glass of water.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Active peptic ulceration. Childn <2 yr. 600 mg: Childn <14 yr.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ bronchial asthma & anamnestic ulcers. Patients w/ history of ulcers. Perform appropriate measures (eg, drainage & aspiration) if unable to expectorate. Terminate use if cutaneous & mucosal changes newly occur. Histamine intolerance. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Dyspnoea, bronchospasm; dyspepsia.
Drug Interactions
May cause dangerous secretory congestion w/ antitussives. Do not mix w/ antibiotics & administer at an interval of at least 2 hr. May potentiate vasodilatory effects of nitroglycerin. Reduced effectiveness w/ activated carbon in high doses. May affect colorimetric determination of salicylates & determination results of ketone bodies.
