Cefixime trihydrate
Indications/Uses
Infections caused by susceptible microorganisms: Upper resp tract infections (eg, bacterial pharyngitis, tonsillitis, otitis media, sinusitis), lower resp tract infections (eg bronchitis), UTI & uncomplicated gonorrhoea.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >12 yr 200-400 mg daily as single or divided dose. Usual treatment course: 5-14 days. Lower resp tract infections 400 mg daily. Upper resp tract infections & uncomplicated UTI 200 mg once daily. Sinusitis Administer for 10-14 days. Uncomplicated gonorrhoea 400 mg as single dose.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ food or milk to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins. Renal impairment (CrCl <60 mL/min).
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to penicillins. Discontinue treatment if allergic reaction & diarrhoea occurs. Prolonged use may result in the overgrowth of Clostridia which may lead to pseudomembranous colitis. Renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhoea, stool changes, headache, dizziness; allergic reactions eg pruritus, urticaria, drug fever, arthralgia; thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, eosinophilia; genital pruritus, vaginitis; pseudomembranous colitis.
