Isosorbide mononitrate
Indications/Uses
Prophylaxis of angina pectoris. Adjunctive therapy in CHF not responding to cardiac glycosides or diuretics.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Initially, 30-60 mg given orally as a single dose. Max daily single dose: 240 mg.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to nitrates. Acute MI w/ low filling pressure, acute circulatory failure, very low BP, hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, constrictive pericarditis, cardiac tamponade, low cardiac filling pressures, aortic/mitral valve stenosis & diseases associated w/ a raised intracranial pressure eg, head trauma & cerebral hemorrhage.
Special Precautions
Recent history of MI. Hypothyroidism, hypothermia, malnutrition & severe liver or renal disease. Galactose intolerance, the Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Pregnancy. Childn.
Adverse Reactions
Throbbing headache, hypotension &/or lightheadedness, dizziness, drowsiness, reflex tachycardia & a feeling of weakness.
Drug Interactions
Potentiate hypotensive effect w/ β-blockers, Ca-channel blockers, vasodilators, alprostadil, aldesleukin, angiotensin II receptor antagonist, alcohol, neuroleptics & TCAs.
