Acetylcysteine
Indications/Uses
Resp tract diseases leading to formation of thick secretions difficult to expectorate eg, acute & chronic bronchitis, laryngitis, sinusitis, tracheitis, flu, bronchial asthma & complementary treatment of mucoviscidosis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 200 mg tds or 600 mg once daily. Childn >2 yr 100-200 mg bd.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Dissolve 1 tab in ½ glass of water.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if bronchospasm occurs. Not suitable for phenylketonurics. Serious skin reactions eg, SJS & Lyell's syndrome. History of peptic ulcer. Perform postural drainage & bronchoaspiration in patients unable to cough up secretions. Patients on Na-restricted diet. Avoid long-term therapy in patients w/ histamine intolerance. Renal or hepatic impairment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Drug Interactions
Inactivation of antibiotics. Lead to build-up of bronchial secretions w/ antitussive medicinal products. Increased vasodilatory & platelet aggregation-inhibiting effect of nitroglycerin. Decreased effect by activated charcoal. Affected values of salicylates by colorimetric analysis. Interfered w/ ketone tests in urine.
