Pharmacology: Albendazole a broad-spectrum anthelmintic that exhibits vermicidal, ovicidal and larvacidal activities. Albendazole exerts its anthelmintic effect by inhibiting tubulin polymerization. This causes a cascade of metabolic disruption which includes energy depletion, immobilization and finally death. The anthelmintic activity of Albendazole is thought to be primarily intra-intestinal. When a higher dose is given, a sufficient amount of Albendazole will be absorbed and can be used to treat hydatid disease and neurocysticercosis.
Albendazole is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract but rapidly undergoes extensive first-pass metabolism. The main/principal metabolite, albendazole sulfoxide, which is widely distributed in the body especially in the bile and the CSF, has anthelmintic activity and a plasma half-life of 8.5 hours. It is approximately 70% protein-bound to the plasma protein. It is then mainly eliminated in the bile while a small amount is excreted in the urine.

Oral susp: All family members and others in close contact should be treated at the same time to prevent reinfestations.
Not recommended for children under 1 year unless advised by a doctor.
Should not be administered during confirmed or suspected pregnancy.
Patients treated for neurocysticercosis should receive appropriate steroid and anticonvulsant therapy to minimize cerebral hypertensive episodes.
Pregnancy: Chewable tab: Should not be administered during confirmed or suspected pregnancy.
Oral susp: Category C: Not recommended during confirmed or suspected pregnancy as the safety for use during pregnancy has not been established.

Caution should be taken when Albendazole is administered concurrently with these medications: Plasma concentration of the active metabolite of Albendazole is raised/increased when administered concomitantly with Dexamethasone, Praziquantel and Cimetidine.
Oral susp: Coadministration with Carbamazepine may decrease the efficacy of Albendazole.
