Albendazole
Indications/Uses
Single or mixed intestinal helminthic infestations eg, pinworm, whipworm, roundworm, hookworm, tapeworm, trichinosis & threadworm (strongyloides).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Chewable tab Threadworm, whipworm, roundworm & hookworm infestation Adult & childn >2 yr 2 tab as single dose, childn 1-2 yr 1 tab as single dose. Tapeworm & strongyloides infestation Adult & childn >2 yr 2 tab once daily for 3 consecutive days, childn 1-2 yr 1 tab once daily for 3 consecutive days. Oral susp Pinworm, whipworm, roundworm, hookworm & trichinosis infestation Adult & childn >2 yr 10 mL as single dose, childn 1-2 yr 5 mL as single dose. Tapeworm & strongyloides infestation Adult & childn >2 yr 10 mL once daily for 3 consecutive days, childn 1-2 yr 5 mL once daily for 3 consecutive days. 2nd course may be repeated after 2-3 wk if infestations persist or recur.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to albendazole or other benzimidazole derivatives. Confirmed or suspected pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Not to be used during confirmed or suspected pregnancy. Lactation. Chewable tab: Unsuitable for phenylketonurics. Oral susp: Ensure appropriate steroid & anticonvulsant therapy in patients treated for neurocysticercosis to minimize cerebral hypertensive episodes. Not recommended in childn <1 yr.
Adverse Reactions
GI symptoms eg, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea; headache.
Drug Interactions
Raised plasma conc w/ dexamethasone, praziquantel, cimetidine. Decreased efficacy w/ carbamazepine.
