Why do I need this medicine?
Mometasone belongs to a group of medicines called "corticosteroids". It is used to prevent the symptoms of asthma. Corticosteroids reduce the swelling in the airways of your lungs. This helps relieve chest tightness, wheezing, and cough so that you can breathe more easily.

This medicine is a preventive asthma medicine which must be used regularly for a certain period of time.
How do I use this medicine?
Use Mometasone exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Mometasone is available as a dry powder inhaler or aerosol inhaler.

Make sure you know how to use the specific device you have been given. If you have problems or do not understand the instructions, ask your doctor or pharmacist to show you how to use it.

Always rinse your mouth and throat with water after using your inhaler.

Wipe the mouthpiece of the inhaler with a dry tissue to clean it. Do not wash or put any part of your inhaler in water.

Do not share your inhaler with others as it could spread infection.

The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on the severity of your condition and response to the medication.

Do not stop taking Mometasone suddenly as it may worsen your condition. Your doctor will gradually reduce the dose before stopping it completely. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully.
What should I do if I have forgotten to use this medicine?
Use the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to use your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
When should I not use this medicine?
Do not use Mometasone to treat an asthma attack or sudden severe symptoms of asthma.
What should I take note of while using this medicine?
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • cataract (clouding of the lens of the eye) and/or glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye)
  • untreated lung infection known as tuberculosis
  • untreated infections caused by fungi, bacteria, viruses, and parasites
  • at risk of low bone mineral count e.g. history of osteoporosis (thinning and weakening of bones), prolonged immobility
  • liver disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Mometasone to a child. Children may be more sensitive to the side effects.

Avoid exposure to anyone who is infected with chicken pox, shingles, or measles. If you are exposed to these infections, contact your doctor immediately.

Why is it important to keep my appointments with the doctor?

Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly.
  • Routine tests (e.g. lung function, eye examination, bone mineral density) may be done while you are being treated with this medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.
  • Regular monitoring of growth of children and adolescents and signs or symptoms of oral thrush while using this medicine may also be needed.
What side effects could I experience?
Mometasone may cause any of the following side effects: headache, back pain, muscle pain, indigestion, sore throat, menstrual pain, sleeping problems, and anxiety.

Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
  • white patches in the mouth or throat
  • changes in eyesight or increased pressure in the eye
  • severe nausea or vomiting, severe dizziness or fainting, muscle weakness, mood changes, decreased appetite, weight loss
  • rashes, breathlessness, swelling of the face, eyes, or mouth
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience any other side effects.
Can I use this with other medicines?
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any of these medicines:
  • medicines to treat fungal infections e.g. ketoconazole, itraconazole
  • medicines for HIV infection e.g. ritonavir, nelfinavir, cobicistat
  • antibiotics e.g. clarithromycin
This list does not include all medicines that may interact with Mometasone.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.

Throw away the canister after the indicated number of doses is used up.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
