Why do I need this medicine?
Chloramphenicol is used to treat bacterial infection of the external ear canal known as otitis externa.
How do I use this medicine?
Use Chloramphenicol exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.

To use the ear drops solution, follow these steps:
  1. Wash your hands thoroughly before using the ear drops.
  2. Lie down or tilt your head to one side.
  3. Gently pull and hold the affected ear up and back. Insert the nozzle into the ear and instil the required number of drops.
  4. Remain lying down or keep your head tilted for several minutes.
  5. Repeat steps 1-4 to administer your dose into the other ear if required.
  6. Replace and tighten the cap of the bottle after each use.
  7. Wash your hands after.
Do not allow the nozzle of this medicine to touch your ears or any other surface. Recap the bottle immediately after use. If this medicine becomes contaminated, it could cause an infection in your ears.

Do not share this medicine with anyone else.

Use Chloramphenicol at regular intervals. Do not skip any doses. You must complete the entire course of this medicine. If you don't, the infection will not be properly controlled.
What should I do if I have forgotten to use this medicine?
Instil the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.

If you often forget to use your medicine, let your doctor and pharmacist know.
When should I not use this medicine?
Do not use this medicine if you ever had an allergic reaction (e.g. rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to Chloramphenicol or any of its ingredients.

Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • a hole or tear in your eardrum
  • family history of blood or bone marrow problems e.g. low red blood cell count in the body
as Chloramphenicol may not be suitable for you.
What should I take note of while using this medicine?
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Chloramphenicol to a child. Children may be more sensitive to the side effects.

Avoid use for more than 1 week. Prolonged use of this medicine is not advisable. Use only as instructed by your doctor.
What side effects could I experience?
Chloramphenicol may cause any of the following side effects: burning, stinging, itching, and inflammation of the skin.

Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
  • rashes, breathlessness, swelling of the face, eyes, or mouth
  • unusual bleeding or bruising, severe tiredness
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Can I use this with other medicines?
Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are using any other medicines in your ears.

Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements, and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
What special dietary instructions should I follow?
Avoid alcohol.
How should I store this medicine?
Store in the refrigerator, between 2-8°C. Do not allow to freeze. If frozen, this medicine will become ineffective and should not be used.

Store away from the reach of children. Protect from light.

Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
