Chloramphenicol
Indications/Uses
Superficial ocular infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult including elderly & childn ≥2 yr 1-2 drops to each eye, up to 6 times daily or more if required. Severe infections Initially 1-2 drops every 15-20 min, reduce frequency gradually as necessary.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Known personal or family history of blood dyscrasias including aplastic anemia.
Special Precautions
Disturbed vision, severe pain w/in eye, photophobia, eye inflammation associated w/ rash on scalp or face, cloudy eyes, unusual pupil, suspected foreign body in the eye. History of conjunctivitis, glaucoma, dry eye syndrome, eye surgery or laser treatment w/in last 6 mth, eye injury. Mercurialentis & atypical band keratopathy. Current use of other eye drops or oint. Avoid use of contact lens. Prolonged use (>5 days). Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Transient eye stinging & irritation.
Drug Interactions
Drugs depressing bone marrow function. Drugs inhibiting chymotrypsin.
