Indications/Uses
Lower resp tract, skin & skin structure, bone & joint & intra-abdominal infections, UTI, meningitis, septicemia & gonorrhea caused by susceptible organisms.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >12 yr 1-2 g once daily. Severe infections Max: 4 g once daily. Infant & childn 3 wk-12 yr 20-80 mg/kg once daily. Neonate up to 2 wk 20-50 mg/kg once daily. Max: 50 mg/kg daily. Bacterial meningitis Infant & childn Initially 100 mg/kg once daily. Max: 4 g daily. Gonorrhoea 250 mg IM as single dose. Preterminal renal failure (CrCl <10 mL/min) Max: 2 g daily.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins & penicillins. Neonates ≤28 days requiring treatment w/ Ca-containing IV soln or infusion eg, parenteral nutrition.
Special Precautions
Discontinue use if allergic reactions occur. Hypersensitivity to penicillins, cephalosporins, carbapenems or other β-lactams. Anaphylactic shock. Pseudomembranous colitis; superinfections. Shadows on gallbladder sonogram. Not to be administered w/ Ca-containing soln. Severe renal & hepatic impairment. Not to be used during 1st trimester of pregnancy. Lactation. Not to be used in hyperbilirubinemic neonates especially prematures.
Adverse Reactions
Loose stools or diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomatitis, glossitis; eosinophila, leukopenia, granulocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia; exanthema, allergic dermatitis, pruritus, urticaria, edema.
Drug Interactions
Antagonistic effects w/ chloramphenicol. False +ve Coombs' & galactosemia test & urine glucose reaction test results.
