Live attenuated varicella virus (Oka/Merck strain)
Indications/Uses
Vaccination against varicella in individuals ≥12 mth.
Dosage/Direction for Use
SC Adult & adolescent ≥13 yr 0.5 mL dose at elected date then, a 2nd dose 4-8 wk later. Childn 12 mth to 12 yr 0.5 mL as a single dose.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to any component including gelatin. History of anaphylactoid reaction to neomycin. Blood dyscrasias, leukemia, lymphoma, malignant neoplasms affecting bone marrow or lymphatic system. Immunosuppressive therapy. Primary & acquired immunodeficiency states. Family history of congenital or hereditary immunodeficiency. Active untreated TB, active febrile illness w/ fever >38.5°C. Pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Do not inject IV. Defer vaccination for at least 5 mth following blood/plasma transfusions or administration of immune globulin or varicella zoster immune globulin (VZIG). Following administration of Varivax, any immune globulin including VZIG should not be given for 2 mth thereafter. Avoid use of salicylates for 6 wk after vaccination. HIV infected young adult & childn w/ & w/o evidence of immunosuppression. Avoid close association w/ high-risk individuals for up to 6 wk. Avoid pregnancy for 3 mth after vaccination. Lactation. Infant <12 mth.
Adverse Reactions
Fever, inj site complaints (pain/soreness, swelling, erythema, rash, pruritus, pyrexia, hematoma, induration, stiffness, numbness) varicella-like rash. Anaphylaxis w/ or w/o allergic history including anaphylactic shock & related phenomena eg, angioneurotic, facial & peripheral edema. Nausea, vomiting. Aplastic anemia, thrombocytopenia, lymphadenopathy. Encephalitis, CVA, transverse myelitis, Guillain-Barre syndrome, Bell's palsy, ataxia, febrile & non-febrile seizures, aseptic meningitis, dizziness, paresthesia, irritability. Pharyngitis, pneumonia/pneumonitis, URTI. SJS, erythema multiforme, Henoch-Schonlein purpura, impetigo & cellulitis, herpes zoster. Necrotizing retinitis in immunocompromised individuals.
