Indications/Uses
Treatment of acute episodes & maintenance of remission of ulcerative colitis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Tab Adult Acute treatment: Ulcerative colitis 1.5-3 g/day in divided dose 3 times daily. Enema Once daily at bedtime. Crohn's disease 1.5-4.5 g/day in divided dose 3 times daily. Maintenance: 500 mg 3 times daily. Supp 1 or 2 supp 2-3 times daily. Granules Adult & elderly Acute treatment: Episodes of ulcerative colitis 1-2 sachets once daily in the morning. Maintenance of remission of ulcerative colitis 0.5 g 3 times daily. Patients at increased risk for relapse 3 g as a single daily dose in the morning.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take 1 hr before meals. Swallow whole, do not chew/crush.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to mesalazine or to salicylates. Severe impairment of hepatic or renal function.
Special Precautions
Renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Allergic exanthema, drug fever; bronchospasm; lupus erythematosus-like syndrome.
Drug Interactions
Lactulose or similar prep which lower stool pH. Possible increase in the myelosuppressive effects of azathioprine, 6-mercaptopurine or thioguanine.
