Acetylcysteine
Indications/Uses
Voluntary or accidental paracetamol poisoning.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Loading dose: 150 mg/kg in 60 min (at least 200 mL in adult & 50 mL in chldn in 5% glucose or physiological soln), followed by subsequent dose w/ 50 mg/kg at slow infusion rate every 4 hr for 72 hr treatment.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Anaphylactic reactions at high doses. Patients w/ bronchial asthma or w/ a history of asthma. Monitor coagulation factors in case of liver transplantation. May interfere w/ the determination of salicylates (colorimetric method), plasma & urinary ketones (nitroprusside test).
Adverse Reactions
Urticaria, angioedema, bronchospasm, nausea, vomiting, HTN, tachycardia, dizziness, fever.
