Triamcinolone
Indications/Uses
Primary or secondary adrenocortical insuffiency, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, nonsuppurative thyroiditis, hypercalcemia associated w/ cancer. RA, ankylosing spondylitis, acute & subacute bursitis, acute nonspecific tenosynovitis & gouty arthritis. Exacerbation or maintenance therapy in SLE & acute rheumatic carditis. Pemphigus, bullous herpetiformis, SJS, exfoliative dermatitis, mycosis fungoides, severe psoriasis. Control of seasonal or perennial allergic rhinitis, bronchial asthma, contact & atopic dermatitis, serum sickness, angioedema, urticaria. Ophth disease. Symptomatic sarcoidosis, Loeffler's syndrome. Idiopathic & secondary thrombocytopenia, acquired hemolytic anemia, erythroblastopenia, congenital hypoplastic anemia. Palliative management of leukemia & lymphomas. Diuresis or remission of proteinuria, conjunction w/ diuretic agents. Ulcerative colitis, regional enteritis, intractable sprue. Dental post-op inflammatory reactions & tuberculous meningitis w/ subarachnoid or impending block.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Systemic fungal infections; active, latent or healed TB; acute psychosis.
Special Precautions
Sufficient amount of protein should be taken during prolonged therapy. Hypothyroidism, cirrhosis; ocular herpes simplex; hypoprothrombinemia; nonspecific ulcerative colitis; diverticulitis, fresh intestinal anastomoses, active or latent peptic ulcer, renal insufficiency, HTN, osteoporosis, acute glomerulonephritis, vaccinia, varicella, exanthema, Cushing's syndrome, resistant infections, DM, CHF, chronic nephritis, thromboembolitic tendencies, thrombophlebitis, convulsive disorders, metastatic carcinoma, myasthenia gravis. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Na & fluid retention, CHF, K loss, hypokalemia alkalosis, HTN; muscle weakness, steroid myopathy, loss of muscle mass, osteoporosis, vertebral compression fractures, aseptic necrosis (femoral & humeral heads), pathologic & spontaneous fractures; peptic ulcer; impaired wound healing, thin fragile skin, petechiae & ecchymoses, facial erythema, increased sweating, SC fat atrophy, purpura, striae, hyperpigmentation, hirsutism, acneform eruptions & suppressed reactions to skin test; convulsion, increased ICP, vertigo, headache, neuritis or paresthesia, aggravation of preexisting psychiatric conditions; menstrual irregularities, development of Cushingoid state, suppression of growth in childn, secondary adrenocortical & pituitary unresponsiveness (trauma, surgery, illness), decreased carbohydrate tolerance, manifestation of DM; posterior subcapsular cataracts; glaucoma, exophthalmos; hyperglycemia, glycosuria, -ve nitrogen balance; necrotizing angiitis, thrombophlebitis, aggravation or masking of infections, insomia, syncopal episodes, anaphylactoid reactions.
