Proteolytic peptide fraction from porcine brain protein
Indications/Uses
Cerebral cerebro-organically induced metabolic disorders, in particular Alzheimer-type senile dementia; post apoplectic defunctionalization symptoms; cranio-cerebral traumata (commotio & contusio, surgical cranial interventions).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Daily administration over a total of 10-20 days. Repeat treatment until no further improvement is achieved, wherein daily administration may be replaced by 2-3 times wkly. Individual therapy cycles should be separated by treatment-free intervals corresponding to the duration of a treatment series. Method of administration: Up to 5 mL IM; up to 10 mL IV; or 10-50 mL IV infusion over approx 15-60 min. Cerebral metabolic disturbances (dementia) 5-30 mL/day. Post apoplectic defunctionalization symptoms & cranio-cerebral traumata 10-50 mL/day. Childn 1-2 mL/day.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Epilepsy. Severe renal insufficiency.
Special Precautions
Exercise caution in allergic diathesis, epileptic diseases & major seizures due to increased frequency of attacks. May impair ability to drive or operate machinery. Avoid use during pregnancy & breast-feeding.
Adverse Reactions
Agitation (aggressiveness, confusion, insomnia). Rare to very rare: Hyperventilation, HTN, hypotension, fatigue, tremor, depression, apathy & stupor, & flu-like symptoms (colds, coughing, resp tract infection); major seizure & convulsion; GI disturbances (lack of appetite, dyspepsia, diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting, nausea); moderate sensation of heat or sweating, vertigo, or palpitation or arrhythmia if inj is performed quickly; local reactions at administration site eg, skin reddening, itching & burning; allergic or hypersensitivity reaction eg, tingling, dermal & local vascular reactions, neck, head & limb pain, fever, slight back pain, dyspnoea, shivering & state similar to shock.
Drug Interactions
Additive effects w/ antidepressants or MAOIs. Should not be administered at the same time as balanced amino acid soln in one infusion.
