Tamsulosin HCl
Indications/Uses
Symptomatic treatment for patients w/ benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) & alternative to surgical correction of the hyperplasia, particularly in patients who are not candidates for or willing to undergo surgery.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Initially 0.4 mg once daily. May be increased to 0.8 mg daily, as needed.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Swallow whole, do not crush/chew.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to quinazolines. Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
ESRD (CrCl <10 mL/min/1.73 m2) Examine patients for prostate carcinoma or other conditions which can cause the same manifestations as BPH prior to initial therapy. Perform digital rectal exam & PSA determination before treatment & at regular intervals thereafter. Risk of intraoperative floppy iris syndrome (IFIS), priapism, CV adverse effects; patients w/ serious or life-threatening reactions.
Adverse Reactions
Orthostatic hypotension; headache, dizziness; abnormal ejaculation; rhinitis; infection. Chest pain; somnolence, insomnia, vertigo; decreased libido; diarrhea, nausea, gum pain, toothache; weakness, back pain; blurred vision; pharyngitis, cough, sinusitis.
Drug Interactions
Increased plasma levels & potentiated CV toxicities w/ cimetidine, clarithromycin, itraconazole, ketoconazole, verapamil & ritonavir. Increased severity of orthostatic hypotension w/ other antihypertensives, α- & β-adrenergic blockers.
