Ibuprofen
Indications/Uses
Relief of mild to moderate pain eg, headache including migraine; toothache; muscular aches; backache; pain associated w/ common cold, flu or sore throat; dysmenorrhea. Reduction of fever. Symptomatic treatment of acute & chronic RA & OA.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >12 yr Pain, dysmenorrhea & fever 200-400 mg every 4-6 hr. Max: 1,200 mg daily. RA & OA 400-800 mg tid to qid. Max: 3,200 mg daily.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take immediately after meals or w/ milk.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients experiencing asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reaction to aspirin or other NSAIDs. Treatment of perioperative pain in setting of CABG surgery. Active or previous peptic ulcer.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ SLE & mixed connective tissue disease due to increased risk of aseptic meningitis. GI disorders & chronic inflammatory intestinal disease eg, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease. Hypersensitivity or having asthma, urticaria or acute sinusitis, GI hemorrhage or perforated ulcer, severe hepatic or renal disease, & dengue hemorrhagic fever are contraindicated. Discontinue if erythematous rash or flu-like symptoms; fever, blister, exfoliation of skin & mucous membrane (eg, buccal cavity, throat, nose, sexual organ, & conjunctivitis) occur. Increased risk of GI bleeding or ulcers; stroke & CV thrombotic events especially when using high doses in prolonged use. Patients w/ heart disease & renal impairment; HTN. Avoid use in individuals suspected of dengue hemorrhage fever or platelets disorders from other causes. Last trimester of pregnancy, & lactation. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Dyspepsia, heart burn, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, diarrhea, constipation, stomatitis, flatulence, bloating, epigastric pain, & abdominal pain.
Drug Interactions
Increased risk of adverse GI effects w/ aspirin or other NSAIDs. Increase effect of anticoagulants eg, warfarin & thrombolytics. Increase serum levels of lithium. Decrease antihypertensive effect of ACE inhibitors & AIIA. Decrease effect of diuretics. Increase risk of MTX toxicity.
