Dioctahedral smectite
Indications/Uses
Symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhoea in childn in addition to oral rehydration & in adults; chronic diarrhoea; pain associated w/ oesogastroduodenal & colic disease.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Acute diarrhea Adult 3 sachets daily. Daily dosage can be doubled at initial treatment. Childn & infants ≥1 yr 4 sachets daily for 3 days, then 2 sachets daily, up to 1 yr 2 sachets daily for 3 days, then 1 sachet/day. Other indications Adult 3 sachets daily. Childn & infants >2 yr 2-3 sachets daily, 1-2 yr 1-2 sachets daily, up to 1 yr 1 sachet daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: For adults, mix in ½ glass of water. Taken preferably in between meals. For childn, may be mixed in a feeding bottle w/ 50 mL of water given during the day or thoroughly mixed w/ semi-liqd food (eg, broth/stewed fruit/mashed veg/baby food).
Contraindications
Fructose intolerance, glucose & galactose malabsorption syndrome or sucrose/isomaltase deficiency.
Special Precautions
Fluid & eletrolyte depletion may occur in patients w/ diarrhea. Pregnancy & lactation.
