Live, attenuated varicella-zoster virus (in-house) (virus strain: Oka/SK, Cell line: MRC-5)
Indications/Uses
Prevention of herpes zoster (shingles) in individuals ≥50 yr.
Dosage/Direction for Use
SC 0.5 mL as single dose in the deltoid region of the upper arm.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. History of anaphylactic/anaphylactoid reaction to neomycin. Patients w/ primary & acquired immunodeficiency states due to conditions eg, acute & chronic leukemias; lymphoma; other conditions affecting the bone marrow or lymphatic system; immunosuppression due to HIV/AIDS, & cellular immune deficiencies. Patients on immunosuppressive therapy (including high-dose corticosteroids); untreated active TB. Pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Do not inj intravascularly or IM. Not indicated for prevention of primary varicella infection (chickenpox); treatment of zoster or post-herpetic neuralgia. Administer only to a recipient who can induce an adequate immune response. Consider deferral of treatment in acute illness eg, presence of fever >38°C. Avoid pregnancy for 3 mth following administration. Lactation. Not to be used for childn & adolescents.
Adverse Reactions
Pain, erythema/redness, induration/swelling; myalgia, fatigue/malaise, headache, diarrhea, vomiting, fever. Nasopharyngitis, URTI; pruritus, rash, erythematous rash, pruritis rash, rash vesicular, skin lesion, drug eruption; insomnia; dreamy state, somnolence, dizziness, headache; musculoskeletal stiffness; nausea; vasculitis; inj site pruritus; ear pain.
