Indications/Uses
Prophylaxis & chronic treatment of asthma, including prevention of day- & nighttime symptoms, treatment of aspirin-sensitive asthmatic patients, & prevention of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction in adult & childn ≥6 mth. Symptomatic relief of day- & nighttime allergic rhinitis (seasonal allergic rhinitis in adults & ped patients ≥2 yr, & perennial allergic rhinitis in adults & ped patients ≥6 mth).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Mild, persistent asthma; allergic rhinitis Once daily. Moderate to severe asthma Once daily w/ inhaled corticosteroids in the evening. Asthma &/or allergic rhinitis Adult ≥15 yr One 10-mg tab daily. Childn 6-14 yr One 5-mg chewable tab daily, 2-5 yr One 4-mg chewable tab or 1 packet of 4-mg oral granules daily. Asthma &/or perennial allergic rhinitis Childn 6 mth to 2 yr 1 packet of 4-mg oral granules daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Oral granules may be administered directly into the mouth, mixed w/ a spoonful of cold/room temp soft food (eg, applesauce), or dissolved in 1 tsp (5 mL) of cold/room temp baby formula/breast milk. Do not dissolve in other liqd. Administer immediately (w/in 15 min).
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Not to be used for acute asthma attacks. Not to substitute abruptly for inhaled or oral corticosteroids. Neuropsychiatric events. Eosinophilia, vasculitic rash, worsening pulmonary symptoms, cardiac complications, &/or neuropathy sometimes diagnosed as Churg-Strauss syndrome. Pregnancy & lactation. Ped patients <6 mth.
Adverse Reactions
Abdominal pain, headache; thirst; diarrhea, hyperkinesia, asthma, eczematous dermatitis, rash. Upper resp infection; increased bleeding tendency, thrombocytopenia; hypersensitivity eg, anaphylaxis, hepatic eosinophilic infiltration; agitation including aggressive behavior or hostility, anxiousness, depression, disorientation, attention disturbance, dream abnormalities, dysphemia (stuttering), hallucinations, insomnia, memory impairment, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, psychomotor hyperactivity (including irritability, restlessness & tremor), somnambulism, suicidal thinking & behavior (suicidality), tic; dizziness, drowsiness, paraesthesia/hypoesthesia, seizure; palpitations; epistaxis, pulmonary eosinophilia; diarrhea, dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting; increased ALT & AST, hepatitis; angioedema, bruising, erythema multiforme & nodosum, pruritus, urticaria; arthralgia, myalgia including muscle cramps; enuresis in childn; asthenia/fatigue, edema, pyrexia.
