The active substance is Ivy leaves dry extract.
100 ml liquid contain 0.7 g ivy leaves dry extract (5 - 7.5:1).
Extractive agent: ethanol 30% (w/w).
Prospan Cough Syrup contains a herbal active substance. Owing to this herbal extract, Prospan Cough Syrup may occasionally appear slightly cloudy or taste slightly different.
This does not have any effect, however, on the quality of the product.
An important term for describing the quality of extracts is the so-called "Drug to Extract Ratio" (DER).
A DER of 5 - 7.5:1 means that 1 part extract is made from 5 - 7.5 parts drugs.
Prospan Cough Syrup is free from gluten.
Excipients/Inactive Ingredients: potassium sorbate (Ph. Eur.) (preservative), anhydrous citric acid (Ph. Eur.), xanthan gum, flavouring, sorbitol solution 70% (crystallising) (Ph. Eur.), purified water.
2.5 ml liquid contain 0.963 g of the sugar substitute sorbitol (Ph. Eur.) = 0.08 BU.
Pharmacology: Pharmacodynamics: In vitro immunohistochemical and biophysical procedures could show an inhibition of the internalisation of β2 receptors by α-hederin. Animal experiments showed a spasmolytic effect. A secretolytic effect is supposed to be triggered by stimulation of the gastric mucosa by reflectorial stimulation of the bronchial mucous glands via sensorical parasympathetic fibres.
Pharmacokinetics: Investigations of pharmacokinetic and bioavailability data are not available.
Prospan Cough Syrup is used to relieve cough in patients who have acute and chronic-inflammatory bronchial diseases, relieve cough caused by thick mucus.
Note: In the event of persistent complaints or the appearance of shortness of breath, fever as well as purulent or bloody expectoration, a doctor should be consulted immediately.
Always take Prospan Cough Syrup exactly as described in this monograph. Check with a doctor or pharmacist if unsure.

Always shake the bottle before use.
Duration of treatment: Length of treatment depends on the nature and severity of the clinical picture. In general it should last for one week. If complaints last longer than one week, medical advice should be taken.
If the patient has the impression that the effect of Prospan Cough Syrup is too strong or too weak, they should talk to the doctor or pharmacist.
If the patient forgets to take Prospan Cough Syrup: Do not take a double dose the next time but continue the intake as prescribed by the doctor or as directed in this monograph.
Method of administration: To be taken using the enclosed measuring cup.
Take the liquid in the mornings, (at noon) and in the evenings.
The patient should not exceed the daily dose indicated in the dosage instructions or prescribed by the doctor. Ingestion of significantly higher amounts (more than three times the daily dose) may lead to nausea, vomiting or diarrhoea. In this case, the patient should consult the doctor.
If the patient is hypersensitive (allergic) to the active substance or any of the other ingredients of Prospan Cough Syrup.
This medicine contains sorbitol.
When used as directed, each dose of Prospan Cough Syrup contains up to 1.9 g sorbitol.
Please take Prospan Cough Syrup only after consultation with a doctor if the patient has a known intolerance to certain sugars.
Driving and using machines: No special precautions are needed.
Use in Pregnancy & Lactation: This medicine should not be used, as there have not been enough studies performed on pregnant women and mothers who breastfeed.
Use in Children: Prospan Cough Syrup should be used in children under the age of two only after having consulted a doctor. Compared with older children, this age group should be monitored very carefully when being given Prospan Cough Syrup, as particular attention must be paid to possible diarrhoea and vomiting. Please also read the notes contained under Side Effects.
This medicine should not be used, as there have not been enough studies performed on pregnant women and mothers who breastfeed.
Like all medicines, Prospan Cough Syrup can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
The assessment of side effects is based on the following frequencies: See Table 2.

Possible side effects: Allergic reactions such as shortness of breath, swelling, skin redness, itching may occur after taking medicines containing ivy. The frequency is unknown.
In sensitive patients gastrointestinal complaints such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea may occur, and there may be a laxative effect due to the sorbitol content. The frequency is unknown.
Reporting of side effects: If the patient experiences any side effects, they should talk to the doctor or pharmacist. This includes any possible side effects not listed in this monograph.
No research has been carried out. No interactions have become known so far. Please tell the doctor or pharmacist if the patient is taking/using or has recently taken/used any other medicines, including medicines obtained without prescription.
Do not store above 30°C.
Shelf-life after first opening the container: 6 months after opening.
