Phenylephrine HCl
Indications/Uses
Vasoconstrictor & mydriatic in the eye. For diagnostic or therapeutic procedures.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & ped Mydriasis Instill 1 drop to each eye. May be repeated after 1 hr, if necessary.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ pre-existing CV disease or cerebrovascular disease, angle-closure glaucoma. Infants <1 yr (Phenylephrine HCl 10% ophth soln).
Special Precautions
CV status should be considered prior to administration. Patients w/ marked HTN, cardiac disorders, advanced arteriosclerotic changes, type 1 IDDM or hyperthyroidism. Increased risk of adverse systemic effects of drug; vasopressor response w/ higher recommended dosage or w/ application to instrument (eg, tonometry), traumatized, diseased, or post-surgical eye or adnexa, or w/ reduced lacrimation during anesth. Monitor rebound miosis effect in older patients undergoing retinal detachment or cataract surgery. Avoid in patients w/ soft contact lenses. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Eye pain, burning or stinging, blurred vision, transient keratitis allergic conjunctivitis, photophobia, lower IOP in normal eyes, rebound miosis; reactive hyperemia, palpitation, tachycardia, premature ventricular contractions, HTN; headache or brow ache, occipital headache, tremors; dermatitis, pallor; pulmonary edema; hypersensitivity & allergic reactions, anaphylaxis (from preservatives).
Drug Interactions
Increased pupil dilation w/ cycloplegic antimuscarinics eg, atropine sulfate, cyclopentolate HCl, homatropine HBr, or scopolamine HBr. Increased risk of HTN w/ MAOIs & guanethidine. May potentiate pressor response, increased BP & cardiac arrhythmia w/ TCAs. Decreased mydriatic response w/ levodopa. Increased risk of CV effects w/ anesth agents.
