Indications/Uses
Postmenopausal osteoporosis, to reduce the risk of vertebral fractures. Established postmenopausal osteoporosis, to reduce the risk of hip fractures. Osteoporosis in men at high risk of fracture.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 35 mg once a wk on the same day each wk.
Administration
Should be taken on an empty stomach: Take before breakfast or at least 30 min before the 1st food/drink/med of the day. Take w/ a full glass (≥120 mL) of plain water while in an upright position. Do not lie down for at least 30 min after taking. Swallow whole, do not chew/crush/suck.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Hypocalcaemia. Severe renal impairment (CrCl <30 mL/min). Pregnancy & lactation.
Special Precautions
History of oesophageal disorders w/ delay oesophageal transit or emptying eg, stricture or achalasia. Patient who are unable to stay in the upright position for at least 30 min after taking Palibone. Active or recent oesophageal or upper GI problems. Consider dental exam w/ appropriate preventive dentistry prior to treatment w/ bisphosphonate in patients w/ concomitant risk factors (eg, cancer, chemotherapy, RT, corticosteroids, poor oral hygiene). Avoid invasive dental procedure during treatment. Treat hypocalcemia & other disturbances of bone & mineral metabolism prior to therapy. Galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Discontinue if atypical femur fracture is suspected. Examine the contralateral femur in patients who have sustained femoral shaft fracture. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <18 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Headache; constipation, dyspepsia, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhoea; musculoskeletal pain.
Drug Interactions
Absorption may be interfered w/ polyvalent cations (eg, Ca, Mg, Fe & Al).
