Indications/Uses
Sepsis, pneumonia, lung abscess, secondary infections in chronic resp lesion, complicated cystitis, pyelonephritis, peritonitis, parametritis due to biapenem-susceptible strains of Staph sp, Strep sp, S. pneumoniae, Enterococcus sp (excluding E. faecium), Moraxella sp, E. coli, Citrobacter sp, Klebsiella sp, Enterobacter sp, Serratia sp, Proteus sp, H. influenzae, P. aeruginosa, Acinetobacter sp, Peptostreptococcus sp, Bacteroides sp, Prevotella sp & Fusobacterium sp.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 1.2 g/day (potency) by IV drip infusion in 2 divided doses over 30-60 min. May be adjusted according to patient's age & symptoms.
Contraindications
History of shock due to any of the excipients of Omegacin. Na valproate.
Special Precautions
Hypersensitivity to carbapenem, penicillin or cephem antibiotics. Personal or familial predisposition to allergic reactions eg, bronchial asthma, rash or urticaria. Severe renal disorder. Patients w/ poor oral food intake & general health or those receiving parenteral alimentation; observe for development of vit K deficiency. History of epilepsy or w/ CNS disorder. False +ve results may occur in urine glucose test w/ Benedict's & Fehling's soln & Clinitest. +ve results may occur in direct Coombs' test. Elderly & childn. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Rash, diarrhea; increased ALT (GPT), AST (GOT) & eosinophilia. Shock, interstitial pneumonia, Pseudomembranous colitis, convulsion, disturbed consciousness, hepatic function disorder, acute renal failure, agranulocytosis, pancytopenia, leucopenia or thrombocytopenia.
Drug Interactions
Decreased valproate blood levels & recurrent epileptic seizures w/ Na valproate. Do not mix w/ amino acid prep.
