Mometasone furoate monohydrate
Indications/Uses
Symptoms of seasonal or perennial rhinitis & relief of nasal congestion associated w/ seasonal allergic rhinitis. Adjunctive treatment to antibiotics for acute episodes of sinusitis. Nasal polyps & associated symptoms including congestion & loss of smell in patients ≥18 yr. Symptoms associated w/ acute rhinosinusitis w/o signs or symptoms of bacterial infection.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Seasonal or perennial rhinitis Adult (including geriatric patient) & adolescent 2 sprays in each nostril once daily. Maintenance: 1 spray in each nostril. Max dose: 4 sprays in each nostril once daily. Childn 2-11 yr 1 spray in each nostril once daily. Treatment of nasal congestion associated w/ seasonal allergic rhinitis Adult & adolescent ≥12 yr 2 sprays in each nostril once daily. Childn 2-11 yr 1 spray in each nostril once daily. Adjunctive treatment of acute episodes of sinusitis Adult (including geriatric patient) & adolescent ≥12 yr 2 sprays in each nostril bid. May be increased to 4 sprays in each nostril bid. Nasal polyposis Adult (including geriatric patient) & adolescent ≥18 yr 2 sprays in each nostril bid. Dose may be reduced to 2 sprays in each nostril once daily once symptoms are adequately controlled. Acute rhinosinusitis Patients ≥12 yr 2 actuations in each nostril bid.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Should not be used in the presence of untreated localized infection involving nasal mucosa; patients who have experienced recent nasal surgery or trauma. Periodically examine for possible changes in nasal mucosa w/in long-term treatment. Discontinue treatment if localized fungal infection of the nose or pharynx develops or nasopharyngeal irritation persists. Patients w/ active or quiescent tuberculous infections of the resp tract, or untreated fungal, bacterial, systemic viral infections of ocular herpes simplex. Patients from long-term use of systemic corticosteroids; systemic corticosteroid w/drawal. Potentially immunosuppressed patients. Cases of nasal septum perforation or increased IOP. Blurred vision or other visual disturbances. Signs or symptoms of severe bacterial infection. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn & adolescents <18 yr (nasal polyposis) & <12 yr (acute rhinosinusitis).
Adverse Reactions
Headache, epistaxis (ie, frank bleeding, blood-tinged mucus, & blood flecks), pharyngitis, nasal burning, irritation & ulceration. Sneezing. Sinus headache.
Drug Interactions
Increased plasma conc & risk of side effects w/ strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (eg, ketoconazole, itraconazole, clarithromycin, ritonavir, cobicistat-containing products).
