Mesalazine
Indications/Uses
Treatment of ulcerative colitis & maintenance of remission of ulcerative colitis & Crohn's ileocolitis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
1-2 tab tid. Acute 800 mg tid (2.4 g daily) for 6 wk. Max: 60 mg/kg daily. Maintenance: 800 mg bid (1.6 g daily) for 6 mth, reduce dose to 1.2 g daily for long term remission.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to salicylate. Childn <2 yr.
Special Precautions
Hepatic & renal impairment. Pregnancy & lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, heartburn, GI discomfort, vomiting, stomatitis, dryness of mouth. Headache, dizziness, skin rash.
Drug Interactions
Coumarin, MTX, probenecid, spironolactone, rifampicin, furosemide.
