Indications/Uses
Cap: Symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhea in adults. Powd for oral liqd: Complementary symptomatic treatment of acute diarrhoea in infant >3 mth & childn together w/ oral rehydration salt (ORS).
Dosage/Direction for Use
Cap Adult Initially 1 cap regardless of time of day. Then, 1 cap tid continued until 2 normal stools are recorded. Max: 7 days. Powd for oral liqd Childn & infant In conjunction w/ ORS: 1.5 mg/kg/dose (1-2 sachets) tid at regular intervals. Max total daily dose: 6 mg/kg. Childn >9 yr weighing >27 kg 60 mg every 8 hr, 30 mth to 9 yr weighing 13-27 kg 30 mg every 8 hr, 9-30 mth weighing 9-13 kg 20 mg every 8 hr, ≥3-9 mth weighing <9 kg 10 mg every 8 hr.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Sachet: Take w/ water: Add granules to small amount of water. Stir & drink immediately before the granules settle at the bottom of the cup or glass. If any granules remain at the bottom of the cup or glass after administration, add a little more water, stir & administer, repeating until all the granules have been swallowed. Directly into the child's mouth: Sprinkle the contents of the sachet on the tongue. Take w/ food: Mix in small amount of food on a spoon.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients who have angioedema w/ ACE inhibitors eg, captopril, enalapril, lisinopril, perindopril, ramipril. Powd for oral liqd: Fructose intolerance, glucose/galactose malabsorption syndrome or sucrase isomaltase insufficiency.
Special Precautions
Do not administer if bloody or purulent stools & fever are present as these may indicate the presence of invasive bacteria. Not recommended in antibiotic-associated & chronic diarrhoea & in cases of prolonged or uncontrolled vomiting. Occurrence of skin reaction/hypersensitivity. History of angioedema. Renal or hepatic impairment. Pregnancy & lactation. Cap: Galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Powd for oral liqd: Do not interrupt regular feeding (including breastfeeding) during treatment & monitor adequate fluid intake. Prolonged use is not recommended. Do not administer in infants <3 mth.
Drug Interactions
