Megestrol acetate
Indications/Uses
Anorexia or wt loss secondary to cancer or AIDS in male & female patients.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 400-800 mg once daily for at least 2 mth.
Administration
Should be taken with food: Take after a meal. Shake well immediately before dosing.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Thromboembolic disorders.
Special Precautions
Patients w/ history of thrombophlebitis. Adrenocortical effects. Impaired renal function. Mild virilisation of external genitalia of female fetuses. Not recommended in pregnancy & lactation. Not recommended in childn. Elderly (monitor renal function).
Adverse Reactions
Adrenal insufficiency, Cushingoid, Cushing's syndrome; DM, impaired glucose tolerance, hyperglycaemia, increased appetite; thrombophlebitis, pulmonary embolism (fatal in some cases), HTN, hot flush; dyspnoea; constipation; increased wt. Tumour flare w/ or w/o hypercalcemia; altered mood; carpal tunnel syndrome, lethargy; cardiac failure; nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, flatulence; rash; alopecia; pollakiuria; menorrhagia, erectile dysfunction; asthenia, pain, oedema.
