Indications/Uses
Adjunct to diet & exercise to improve glycemic control in adults w/ type 2 DM as monotherapy or in combination. As initial combination therapy w/ metformin when diabetes is not adequately controlled by diet & exercise alone. In combination w/ other medicinal products for diabetes, including insulin, when these do not provide adequate glycaemic control.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Monotherapy & in combination w/ metformin w/ thiazolidinedione or w/ insulin (w/ or w/o metformin) 50 or 100 mg daily. In dual combination w/ sulfonylurea 50 mg once daily. In combination w/ metformin & sulfonylurea 100 mg daily. Moderate or severe renal impairment or ESRD 50 mg once daily.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Not for type 1 diabetes or treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis. Patients w/ NYHA functional class IV. Perform LFT prior to, during 1st yr of treatment & periodically thereafter. Galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. May impair ability to drive & use machinery. Patients w/ hepatic impairment including patients w/ pre-treatment ALT/AST >2.5x ULN; ESRD on haemodialysis. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <18 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Dizziness, tremor, headache, asthenia, increased wt, peripheral oedema, nausea, GERD, chills, decreased blood glucose, hypoglycemia, hyperhidrosis.
