1 mg tab: To increase hair growth & prevent further hair loss in male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). 5 mg tab: Symptomatic treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men, reduces risk of acute urinary retention & need for surgery including transurethral resection of prostate & prostatectomy. In combination w/ doxazosin to reduce risk of symptomatic progression in BPH (confirmed ≥4-point increase in American Urological Association symptom score).
Not indicated in women & childn. Reduced serum PSA. Hepatic dysfunction. Pregnant women should be advised to avoid contact w/ crushed or broken tab (potential risk of abnormalities in external genitalia of male fetus). 1 mg tab: Not effective in postmenopausal women w/ androgenetic alopecia. 5 mg tab: Monitor for obstructive uropathy in patients w/ large residual urinary vol &/or severely diminished urinary flow. Rule out other urological diseases eg, prostate cancer before initiating therapy & periodically thereafter.
