Favipiravir
Indications/Uses
Novel or re-emerging influenza virus infections in which other anti-influenza virus agents are not effective or insufficiently effective.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult 1,600 mg bid on Day 1 followed by 600 mg bid for 4 days. Total treatment duration: 5 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food.
Contraindications
History of hypersensitivity. Known or suspected pregnancy.
Special Precautions
Not effective against bacterial infections. Flu-like symptoms. Severe abnormal behavior leading to fall accidents. Patients w/ history of abnormalities in uric acid metabolism or gout. Hepatic impairment. Women of childbearing potential & her partner should use most effective contraceptive methods during & for 7 days after treatment. Not to be administered in known or suspected pregnancy & during lactation. Childn. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Shock, anaphylaxis; pneumonia; fulminant hepatitis, hepatic dysfunction, jaundice; TEN, SJS; acute kidney injury; decreased WBC, neutrophil & platelet count; neurological & psychiatric symptoms eg, disturbed consciousness, deliria, hallucination, delusion, convulsion; haemorrhagic colitis. Increased AST (GOT), ALT (GPT) & γ-glutamyl transpeptidase; diarrhoea; increased blood uric acid & triglycerides.
Drug Interactions
Additively enhanced reabsorption of uric acid w/ pyrazinamide. Increased blood level of repaglinide. Increased blood level w/ theophylline. Decreased blood level of active forms of famciclovir & sulindac.
