Constipation, for regulation of physiological rhythm of colon. When a soft stool is considered of medical benefit (haemorrhoids, post colonic/anal surgery). Hepatic encephalopathy. Treatment & prevention of hepatic coma or pre-coma.
Constipation or when soft stool is considered of medical benefit Adult Initial dose for 3 days: 15-45 mL. Maintenance dose: 15-30 mL daily. If maintenance dose is <15 mL, use oral soln (in sachet). Childn 7-14 yr Initially 15 mL daily. Maintenance dose: 10-15 mL daily, 1-6 yr Initial/maintenance dose: 5-10 mL daily. Infant <1 yr Initial/maintenance dose: Up to 5 mL daily. Hepatic encephalopathyAdult Initially 20-30 g or 30-45 mL tid to qid, may be adjusted to achieve 2-3 soft stools/day.
Not to be administered if abdominal symptoms are present. Painful abdominal symptoms of undetermined cause prior to treatment. Insufficient therapeutic effect after several days. Caution w/ higher dose use in hepatic encephalopathy treatment: Diabetics, diarrhea & electrolyte balance disturbance. Lactose or galactose or fructose intolerance, total lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Expect fecal incontinence, bedsoiling, & peri-anal irritation if administered as retention enema. Observe patient's hydration status. Childn (use under medical supervision).
