Lactulose
Indications/Uses
Constipation, for regulation of physiological rhythm of colon. When a soft stool is considered of medical benefit (haemorrhoids, post colonic/anal surgery). Hepatic encephalopathy. Treatment & prevention of hepatic coma or pre-coma.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Constipation or when soft stool is considered of medical benefit Adult Initial dose for 3 days: 15-45 mL. Maintenance dose: 15-30 mL daily. If maintenance dose is <15 mL, use oral soln (in sachet). Childn 7-14 yr Initially 15 mL daily. Maintenance dose: 10-15 mL daily, 1-6 yr Initial/maintenance dose: 5-10 mL daily. Infant <1 yr Initial/maintenance dose: Up to 5 mL daily. Hepatic encephalopathy Adult Initially 20-30 g or 30-45 mL tid to qid, may be adjusted to achieve 2-3 soft stools/day.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: For single daily dose, take at the same time each day (eg, during breakfast).
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients. Galactosaemia, GI obstruction, digestive perforation or risk of digestive perforation.
Special Precautions
Not to be administered if abdominal symptoms are present. Painful abdominal symptoms of undetermined cause prior to treatment. Insufficient therapeutic effect after several days. Caution w/ higher dose use in hepatic encephalopathy treatment: Diabetics, diarrhea & electrolyte balance disturbance. Lactose or galactose or fructose intolerance, total lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Expect fecal incontinence, bedsoiling, & peri-anal irritation if administered as retention enema. Observe patient's hydration status. Childn (use under medical supervision).
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea. Flatulence, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting.
Drug Interactions
May inactivate drugs having colon pH-dependent release (eg, 5-ASA agents).
