Micronized 17 β-estradiol (natural)
Indications/Uses
Treatment of the climacteric symptoms associated w/ natural or artificial menopause, & prevention of postmenopausal osteoporosis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
For continuous or cyclical treatment. Apply usual starting dose 1 mg daily to the skin of the lower trunk or the thighs. Re-adjust after 2-3 cycles individually from 0.5-1.5 g/day. In patients w/ an intact uterus, combine Divigel w/ an adequate dose of progestin for adequate duration.
Contraindications
Undiagnosed vag bleeding. Confirmed active venous thromboembolism w/in the last 2 yr. History of recurrent VTE or known thrombophilic disease in patients not on anticoagulant treatment, severe hepatic disease, malignant conditions. Pregnancy or lactation.
Special Precautions
Perform gynaecological exam before initiating therapy & repeat yearly. Treat atypical adenomatous endometrial hyperplasia before initiating therapy. CV disease, high BP, hyperlipidemia, jaundice, gallstone, history of migraine or severe headache, benign breast disease, history of breast cancer in family, diabetes, epilepsy, asthma & multiple sclerosis.
Adverse Reactions
Breast tenderness, headache, oedema, wt gain, unscheduled vag bleeding or spotting, changes in libido or mood, nausea, stomach cramps, HTN, skin irritation at application site.
