Indications/Uses
Control of hyperphosphatemia in chronic renal failure. Ca deficiency states which may occur in acute & chronic hypoparathyroidism, postmenopausal & senile osteoporosis, rickets & osteomalacia. Ca supplement in childn, pregnant & lactating women.
Dosage/Direction for Use
May gradually increase dose to bring serum phosphate <6 mg/dL, as long as hypercalcemia does not develop. Adult dialysis patient Initially 1 tab w/ each meal. Most patients require 2-3 tab w/ each meal. Hypocalcemia 1-2 tab bid after meals.
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Special Precautions
Reduce dose or discontinue immediately if hypercalcemia develops. Not to be given in patients on digitalis. Monitor serum Ca twice wkly during dose adjustment. Concurrent use w/ other Ca supplements. End-stage renal failure.
Adverse Reactions
Mild hypercalcemia (Ca >10.5 mg/dL) manifest as constipation, anorexia, nausea & vomiting. Severe hypercalcemia (Ca >12 mg/dL) associated w/ confusion, delirium, stupor & coma.
